FAQ

All too often, homeowners discover that the roofing system installed on their home has failed after they see obvious signs of damage on their roof, or inside of their home. It is important to inspect the roof of your home at least 1-2 times a year to help avoid costly damages that may occur from a failing roofing system. Below are a few key items to look for:

  • – Curled, warped, cracked or missing shingles
  • – Deteriorating flashing, siding or loose seams.
  • – Leaks in the attic after rainfall.
  • – Excessive amount of shingle granules in the gutters and downspouts.
  • – Water stains on the inside walls and ceilings of the home.
  • – Blistering or peeling paint on the inside/outside of the home.
  • – High energy bills.

There are several factors that will affect the lifespan of your roofing system such as the environment in which it’s in, the quality of the original installation, as well as the quality of the roofing material used.
Here is the lifespan of a typical roofing system based on the material used according to the National Association of Home Builders(NAHB):

– Shingle/Composition roofs | ~20 Years
– Fiber Cement Shingles | ~25 Years
– Wood Shake Roofs | ~30 Years
– Slate, copper and tile roofs | 50 Years+

It is important to understand that drastic weather conditions such as snow and hail can dramatically reduce the lifespan of your roofing system.

Changing a roof is no easy task. It can take a day to a few weeks depending on the complexity of the project. Having to do a tear off, steep pitched roofs, poor weather conditions as well as other factors can affect the timeline of a roof installation. If we are repairing the roof instead of replacing it, the process may be much quicker. We will do our best to let you know approximately how long the project will take in our quote.

When it comes to re-roofs, you really only have two options. Either tear off the old roofing system and install a new one, or apply the new roofing system on top of the old roof, as long as there is a maximum of two roof layers on the roof. Although two layers are allowed by the North Carolina State Building Code, we recommend removing the old roofing system to maximize the life of the new system and prevent unforeseeable problems to arise.
