If you're getting estimates for a new roof in Charlotte, you'll hear three names over and over: Owens Corning Duration, GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed Landmark. They're three of the most common architectural shingles on Charlotte-area homes, and every roofer seems to swear by a different one.
We install all three. Here is an honest side-by-side comparison from a Charlotte roofer: what's actually different, what matters in our climate, and what matters more than the brand.

The Short Answer
All three are solid, lifetime-warranty architectural shingles from major manufacturers, and all three hold up well in Charlotte when they're installed correctly. For most homes, the quality of the installation and the parts that go with the shingle matter more than which of the three you pick.
That said, there are real differences:
- Owens Corning Duration is built around a reinforced nailing strip (SureNail) that helps the shingle grip the nails. It's rated for 130 mph winds with standard 4-nail installation.
- GAF Timberline HDZ has the longest algae-streak warranty of the three (25 years) and a wind warranty with no maximum wind speed when installed with GAF's matching accessories.
- CertainTeed Landmark is a heavier, traditional-looking laminate with a wide nailing area. Its higher-end Landmark PRO adds a longer algae warranty and better impact resistance.

Owens Corning Duration

Duration is the shingle we install most. Its standout feature is SureNail Technology: a strip of woven, engineered fabric across the nailing area. It gives the nail a reinforced target and adds a third layer of reinforcement where the two laminated layers meet. Owens Corning rates Duration for 130 mph winds with standard 4-nail installation, and it meets the ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H wind tests.
Good fit if: you want a proven, widely available shingle with strong wind performance and a bold, dimensional look. Popular colors here include Estate Gray, Onyx Black, Driftwood and Williamsburg Gray.
Keep in mind: the algae warranty is 10 years, shorter than GAF's. Standard Duration isn't impact-rated; Owens Corning makes Duration STORM for homeowners who want an impact-resistant shingle.

GAF Timberline HDZ
Timberline HDZ is GAF's main architectural shingle and one of the best-selling shingles in the country. GAF's LayerLock design bonds the layers in the nailing area to create a wide nailing zone (StrikeZone), which helps crews nail accurately.
Its two biggest selling points are warranties. The StainGuard Plus algae warranty runs 25 years, the longest of the three. And when HDZ is installed with at least four qualifying GAF accessories (starter strip, roof deck protection, ridge cap and leak barrier or attic ventilation), its WindProven warranty covers wind for 15 years with no maximum wind speed. It also carries a UL 2218 Class 3 impact rating.
Good fit if: black algae streaks are your main worry, for example a shaded, north-facing roof under big trees, or you like GAF's color palette.
Keep in mind: to get the full wind warranty, the roofer has to install GAF's matching accessories. Ask to see them listed on your estimate.
CertainTeed Landmark
Landmark is CertainTeed's best-known architectural shingle. It's a thick, two-layer laminate with a traditional wood-shake look, and its NailTrak nailing area is extra wide (CertainTeed describes it as about 1-1/2 inches).
Standard Landmark carries a 110 mph wind warranty, with a higher rating available when it's installed with CertainTeed starter and hip-and-ridge shingles, plus a 10-year StreakFighter algae warranty. The step-up Landmark PRO adds a longer algae warranty and a UL 2218 Class 3 impact rating.
Good fit if: you like a heavier, more traditional look, or your HOA's approved color list leans toward CertainTeed colors.
Keep in mind: make sure your estimate says which Landmark you're getting (Landmark or Landmark PRO). The warranties are different.
What Matters in Charlotte's Climate
- Algae streaks. Charlotte's heat and humidity make the black streaks you see on older roofs very common, especially on shaded and north-facing slopes. All three shingles include algae-resistant granules; GAF's warranty is longest.
- Summer thunderstorms and wind. All three pass the top industry wind tests. The bigger factor is installation: correct nail placement, proper starter strips along the edges and sealed ridge caps.
- Hail. Serious hail is occasional here, not constant. If your area gets it often or your insurer offers a discount, ask about an impact-resistant (Class 3 or Class 4) option.
- HOAs. Many neighborhoods in Ballantyne, Mint Hill, Waxhaw and Weddington have approved color lists. Check yours before you fall in love with a color.
What Matters More Than the Brand
Most roofs that fail early fail because of how they were installed, not because of the shingle brand. Before you sign, make sure your estimate covers:
- The exact shingle line and color (not just "architectural shingles").
- Underlayment, starter strips, ridge cap and ventilation from the same manufacturer. That's often what qualifies you for the stronger manufacturer warranties.
- Ice-and-water protection in valleys and around chimneys and skylights.
- New flashing and pipe boots, not reused old ones.
- Decking replacement: how much is included and the price per sheet beyond that.
- A written workmanship warranty from the roofer, separate from the shingle warranty.
A certified installer matters too. We are an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor; GAF and CertainTeed have their own programs (GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster). Certification can unlock stronger system warranties, so ask any roofer which certification they hold.
Which One Do We Recommend?
For most Charlotte homes, we recommend Owens Corning Duration: it's proven, rated for 130 mph winds with a standard install, and as a Preferred Contractor we know the full system well. If algae streaks are your biggest concern, GAF Timberline HDZ is an excellent choice. If you prefer a heavier, traditional look or your HOA favors it, CertainTeed Landmark is a great shingle too.
The price difference between the three is usually small compared with what really drives cost: roof size, pitch and how much decking needs replacing. Most full roof replacements on Charlotte-area homes run $8,500 to $19,500. See our roof replacement cost guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Owens Corning or GAF better?
Neither is clearly better across the board. Owens Corning Duration has a strong standard wind rating with 4 nails; GAF Timberline HDZ has a longer algae warranty and a wind warranty with no maximum speed when installed with GAF accessories. Installation quality matters more than the brand.
Which shingle lasts longest in North Carolina?
All three are designed to last decades and carry limited lifetime manufacturer warranties. In Charlotte, real-world lifespan depends mostly on installation, attic ventilation and how much shade and moisture the roof gets.
Do all three cost about the same?
Usually, yes. On a typical Charlotte home the shingle brand changes the total less than roof size, pitch, decking repairs and accessories do.
Can I see the colors in person?
Yes. We bring sample boards to every free inspection and can show you photos of finished roofs in Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill and Waxhaw. See our project portfolio.
