A roof replacement is a big project, but for most Charlotte homes it's finished in one to two days. Knowing what happens, and in what order, makes the whole thing a lot less stressful.
Below we walk through a real replacement our crew completed on Monroe Rd in Charlotte: Owens Corning Duration shingles in Williamsburg Gray, from tear-off to final cleanup.

Most of the decisions happen before the crew shows up:
The crew covers landscaping and sets up for debris, then strips the old shingles, underlayment and worn flashing all the way down to the wooden deck.

With the old roof off, we can finally see the plywood underneath. Any soft, rotted or delaminated boards get replaced so the new shingles have a solid surface to nail into. Your estimate should spell out how decking replacement is priced, so there are no surprises.
This is the layer you never see, and it's what keeps water out when a shingle fails:

Starter strips go along the edges first so the first row seals properly. Then the shingles go on row by row, nailed in the manufacturer's nailing zone. Correct nailing is what keeps shingles on in a Charlotte thunderstorm.

Chimneys, walls, skylights, plumbing pipes and vents are where most roofs leak. New flashing and new pipe boots go in with the new roof. Reusing old, cracked boots is a common shortcut that causes leaks a few years later. (See common roof leaks and pipe boot repair.)

The peak of the roof gets a ridge vent to let hot, damp air out of the attic, then ridge cap shingles over the top. Good ventilation helps your new roof last its full life and can make upstairs rooms more comfortable in summer.
The crew clears debris from the roof, gutters and yard and runs a magnetic sweeper over the lawn and driveway to pick up nails. Then we walk the job with you and share photos of the finished roof.

Here's another recent replacement on a two-story brick home, shot with our drone. The first two photos show the roof fully dried-in with synthetic underlayment and the shingle bundles staged along the ridges, ready to go on. The last photo is the same roof finished in Owens Corning Duration, Onyx Black.

Most single-family roofs are done in one to two days. Larger or steeper roofs, homes with a lot of rotted decking, or rain delays can add time. We'll give you a realistic timeline up front.
No, as long as we can reach the work area and an outdoor outlet. Most homeowners like to be around at the start and for the final walkthrough.
Yes, especially during tear-off and nailing. If you work from home, plan to work from somewhere else for the day.
We watch the forecast and only open as much roof as we can dry-in that day. If weather moves in, the exposed areas get covered.
It depends on size, pitch, material and decking condition. See our 2026 Charlotte roof cost guide or roof replacement in Charlotte.
